Officially, “Ready Player 1” will be released tomorrow, April 20th (Friday), but on the 18th (Wednesday), a special Japanese Premiere was held in the Kabuki-chō Cine City, in Tokyo.

Steven Spielberg’s new movie became a worldwide hit, as throughout the US, the box office for producers and directors was more than of 1 trillion yen.

The movie’s world is set 27 years in the future. As the genius behind the “Oasis”, a dream-like place where people can become whoever they please, leaves behind a will composed of three riddles that, upon being solved, will ensure an enormous fortune of 56 billion yen to the one who solves them, opening a worldwide competition.

Many icons from Japanese pop culture show up in the movie, from Mobile Suit Gundam’s RX-78 Gundam, the Swordfish II from Cowboy Beebop and Kaneda’s bike from Akira, to Hello Kitty, but even other famous characters and vehicles make their cameos, such as the Delorean from Back to The Future!

Besides the director himself, Steven Spielberg, the actors too took part to the Japan Premiere: Tye Sheridan (Parsifal/Wade), Olivia Cooke (Artemis/Samantha) and Morisaki Win (Daitō/Toshirō).

Other guests made it to the red carpet, too, besides the Olympic female ski jumper medalist Takanashi Sara,even KaidaYūji, Aramaki Shinji and the Kanō sisters appeared at the event!

On the stage, Spielberg commented with “I am very fascinated by Japanese pop culture, such as anime and movies.”. He added how seeing the Japanese movie“Godzilla” as a child, later inspired him for his “Jurassic Park”.

Ready Player 1 will have a broad release from tomorrow, April 20th (Friday), throughout the country. Go watch it and keep an eye on Gundam’s cameo!
