The PGU 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam Appears in a VR World! An Online GUNPLA PRESENTATION VR Event Report

The PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED 1/60 RX-78-2 GUNDAM, a culmination of 40 years of GUNPLA history, has been unveiled during GUNPLA PRESENTATION VR, the first fully online GUNPLA event which started on Thursday, October 8th.

This presentation unveils all of the details of the PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED RX-78-2 GUNDAM, the culmination of the GUNPLA Evolution Project, and incorporates the latest technology with an internal structure and outer appearance without compromise to create the ultimate product. The VR world also offers content to look back on the history of GUNPLA.

This is a report of the fully online VR presentation and various forms of special content available in the VR world.

We first downloaded and installed the VR app (only compatible with Windows PCs) and activated it. We then selected our avatar and moved to the VR world and entered the Presentation Room, the venue for the presentation.

The Presentation Room automatically placed us in special seats in the front row to watch the presentation on a massive screen that appeared right in front of our eyes. We were able to freely move our perspective during the presentation and while we were waiting, resulting in an extremely immersive experience.

When we were waiting for the presentation to begin, a 3D avatar of Amuro Ray lit up by a spotlight appeared and Toru Furuya, the presenter and voice actor of Amuro, joyfully exclaimed: “The day has finally come when we can reveal the PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED. I couldn't be happier…!”

The presentation began with an introduction to the history of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. A review of the history of how the series grew to its current colossal state through the avid support of fans then ensued.

The next section focused on GUNPLA, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Then there was a review of the GUNPLA LINK Project, a project where people, items, and wishes came together through GUNPLA to create items that lead to the future of GUNPLA. The PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED finally came to fruition as the culmination of the GUNPLA LINK Project’s LINK THE FUTURE project.

Technology for articulation, transformation, light-up effects, details, and assembly processes nurtured through brands such as HG, RG, and PG have come together to create the PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED, the ultimate GUNPLA that can be created in this day and age. It was explained as a milestone for the future of GUNPLA.

The details of the PGU RX-78-2 GUNDAM were finally revealed in the next section of the presentation. The screen moved while the music ramped up and a large hangar appeared from behind. The PGU RX-78-2 GUNDAM was revealed in 1/1 scale in the VR world with spotlights lighting it up. Features unique to the VR presentation, such as the moving seats like an amusement ride, allowed us to ascend and descend like an elevator to witness the entirety of the MS from the tip of its head to its toes. Even Mr. Furuya was stunned by the dynamic scale of the MS and quoted Amuro’s words: “No wonder its father was obsessed with it…”

The features and points where thought was especially put into the PGU RX-78-2 GUNDAM were then revealed.

After the detailed product introduction, an announcement for the GUNPLA EXPO TOKYO 2020 feat. GUNDAM conference was made. It is a large event with the concept of a GUNPLA dream factory of the future that will solely feature GUNPLA and will be held from Thursday, November 12th to Sunday, November 15th. A prototype of the PGU RX-78-2 GUNDAM will also be displayed at the venue and it was revealed that new challenges, projects, and items would be announced.

The presentation concluded with Mr. Furuya’s words: “The PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED isn’t just for show!” resembling Amuro’s quote from Char’s Counterattack.

We were then led to the Reception Room. Our avatars appeared and we were able to freely move around the VR world and communicate with the other attendees. A 3D avatar of Amuro also appeared beside the PGU RX-78-2 GUNDAM in the Presentation Room, where the presentation took place. It is a must-see area for all fans since we were able to enjoy the details of Amuro and the Gundam from all angles.

As we moved deeper into the Reception Room, we were able to move to the Exhibition Room which showed the history of GUNPLA. The steps of evolution toward the PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED were explained in detail in front of a mystical background, and we could examine the challenges of the past that had to be overcome.
