The immersive VR movie Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom has been nominated in the Extended Reality (XR) category at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. This is the first time that a work from the Gundam series has been nominated for an international film festival.
The Venice International Film Festival is held annually in Venice, Italy, and is one of the world's three major film festivals alongside the Cannes Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival.
This year's XR category will see nominations and awards given to immersive media projects that cover not only virtual reality (VR) technology, but all XR creative means of expression.
We've received an enthusiastic comment from Director Kenichi Suzuki, so let’s get right to it.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom is a VR feature film produced in collaboration between Bandai Namco Filmworks and Atlas V, a company that has produced many VR works, and distributed by Astrea. Set in the year 0096 of the Universal Century, one of the eras of the Gundam series that celebrated its 45th anniversary this year, you can experience a life-sized Universal Century while participating in the story as the protagonist who belongs to Argent Keil, an unofficial mercenary organization that is neither the Federation nor Zeon.
It will be compatible with Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 and is scheduled to be released in the fall of 2024. Pre-orders are being accepted at the Meta Quest Store, so be sure to check it out.

We have received a comment from Director Kenichi Suzuki!
I am truly grateful to have been nominated for the Immersive category at the Venice International Film Festival. And I am very happy to have had the opportunity to participate in this challenging project, the VR film Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom.
For someone such as myself, who specializes in directing 2D animation, this project was a very stimulating and challenging experience to tackle as the directing and production methods were different from 2D animation. Many of the staff members, myself included, were working on VR for the first time and the production process was extremely difficult. But with the cooperation of Atlas V and Studio ALBYON, we were able to solve many problems like stacking building blocks one by one, such as how to summarize the characteristics of Gundam works, the directing techniques unique to VR, and the technical regulations of CG. I am now convinced that we have completed an innovative film.

Gundam is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, and I believe that this VR movie, which allows everyone to experience the Universal Century, is very exciting content. I wish I could tell my childhood self, “One day, you’ll be able to experience the world of the Universal Century as a main character.” The Bandai Namco Group already has a life-sized Gundam statue, but I think that VR is innovative in that it allows you to experience the world view, characters, and story.
I will refrain from explaining the specific content, but I would like everyone to actually watch it in VR and feel it to share in the excitement.
I believe that VR movies like this will be established as a new format in the future.
Lastly, the other staff members and I would like to express our gratitude for being invited to participate in this wonderful opportunity.
Thank you very much.
