Official report of the NYCC2024 panel featuring screenwriters and producers:
The series began streaming on Netflix on Thursday, October 17th, and screenwriter Gavin Hignight commented: “I'm excited that everyone can finally see it,” as the special screening began. Applause and cheers rang out from the audience once the screening ended, and Gavin Hignight stated, "We were able to create this wonderful series as a global team consisting of Director Erasmus from Germany, Sunrise Studios and SAFEHOUSE from Japan, and myself from the United States."
Episode 1 begins with a depiction of an intense battle fought between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation Forces, and the Red Wolf Squadron makes an iconic appearance from the sky. “We were inspired by various war movies outside of the Gundam series, and the script for this episode is focused around battle-weary soldiers who are exhausted but still fulfill their duties on Earth." (Gavin Hignight) “We wanted everything to be in the proper scale, and kept in mind how large Mobile Suits over 10 meters tall would feel when they descend to Earth, as well as how they contrast with the surrounding environments and backgrounds.” (Hiroaki Yura)
They noted that they had read comments on social media stating that the Gundam EX was horrifying and that it was worthy of the title of the “white devil.” Gavin Hignight revealed “We intended to make the Gundam EX a frightening MS, and the mechanical designs by mechanical supervisor Kimitoshi Yamane were fantastic. We wanted it to be a terrifying MS to match the story, and immediately approved the idea to make its eyes glow red."
Every single one of the opening movies for all six episodes of the series are unique, incorporating various elements. Hiroaki Yura commented “Although the opening movies weren’t made with Unreal Engine 5, they contain various homages to past Gundam titles. I was personally impressed how each movie was made with respect for Yoshiyuki Tomino (the original creator of the series)."
In the end, Producer Iyadomi asked what kind of Gundam title they aimed to create through this project, to which Gavin Hignight replied, “I think we were all on the same page from the beginning, and intended it to have a theme focused on the horrors of war depicted like a horror movie. Most titles are made from the perspective of members of the Earth Federation Forces, but I thought it would be absolutely terrifying if we portrayed the Gundam from the perspective of soldiers of the Zeon forces.”
