―First off, can you introduce yourself to Gundam fans abroad before they begin reading the rest of the interview?―
I’m an idol who is mainly active in Japan—the Asian blue comet, Aozora Sorano.
My favorite mobile suit is the Zaku II FZ. Thank you for reading.

-What was your first encounter with the Gundam series?-
As a child, I was aware that "Mobile Suit Gundam AGE" was being broadcast, but since the series had been around so long, I had the sense that it was intended for older generations.
But one day, as I was chatting with my manager about another robot anime, I mentioned that I’d like to pilot a robot one day. My manager then told me that I could pilot a Gundam right now.
That’s how I was introduced to "Mobile Suit Gundam Bonds of the Battlefield" at a video arcade. I began learning about Gundam after that.

-So you first learned about Gundam from the arcade game? How did your love of the series develop from there?-
I played "Bonds of the Battlefield" without knowing anything, so I assumed that I was piloting the Gundam itself, but my manager had actually put me in a Zaku. When I got to the briefing screen for Zeon soldiers and had to choose a mobile suit, I thought the Zaku II FZ looked cute, and I stuck with that as my unit from that point on.
Then I started wondering which of the Gundam shows the Zaku II FZ appears in and when I looked it up, I found out about "Mobile Suit Gundam 0080:War in the Pocket." Luckily, it was an OVA series that didn’t have many episodes, so I watched it and thought, "This is awesome!" It really had an impact on me.

Luckily, it was an OVA series that didn’t have many episodes, so I watched it and thought, "This is awesome!" It really had an impact on me.
Once I realized that Gundam is an anime with a deep message, my urge to watch more Gundam works grew even stronger. "War in the Pocket" takes place during the One Year War, and the story of the One Year War is told in the original "Mobile Suit Gundam," right? Since the setting can’t be contained in one series, I knew I needed a deeper understanding, so I began watching the whole series. It was like, "Oh, there’s 'Mobile Suit Gundam THE 08th MS TEAM' too!" "Wow, there are lots of others!"
-"War in the Pocket" was known for presenting a particularly realistic depiction of war. I guess that's what struck a chord with you.-
Before learning about Gundam, I hadn’t watched many shows that had war as a theme, but it taught me that I can’t turn a blind eye to such things.
It’s not just war. I think a lot of fictional stories tend to idealize painful situations, like when people fail to understand each other. I realized that Gundam was able to portray life, death, and the tragedy of war in a truly realistic way and I was very surprised.
I felt that if that’s what the animation wanted to express, then I had better pay attention.

-You make your own Gunpla too. How much did you learn about the Gundam series before you became interested in Gunpla and other aspects?-
Right around the time I got addicted to "Bonds of the Battlefield," they did a collaboration with "Gundam Build Fighters."
For a limited time, they would display Gunpla packages on the MS selection screen, and seeing that, I thought Gunpla looked fun.
There happened to be a store that sold Gunpla in my neighborhood, and since I’d become a fan, I thought I should give them a try. I knew I would enjoy it.
After all, being able to put together your favorite mobile suit is just the kind of "dream" Bandai is known for delivering!
As they say in "Gundam Build Fighters," "Gunpla is freedom!" You have the freedom to customize your machine, and you can add your favorite colors too. I realized I could make my mobile suit cute if I wanted to! I got really excited while I was building.

-So you even learned about panel lining and painting on your own?-
The manager who introduced me to "Bonds of the Battlefield" also knew a lot about Gunpla, so I learned naturally from an expert while I was building. The first thing I tried was frosting. I retained the coloring of the materials, but I also filed them down and sprayed frosting…
As an idol, my signature color is blue, so I wanted to paint my favorite MS that color.
Painting tools were available for purchase too, so I never had any thought of not doing it.
And that’s how I built this guy, my first custom-painted Zaku II FZ.

-And so, as you developed your building skills, you entered "GUNPLA BATTLE PROJECT type 絆.*" -
*A project held in 2015. After winning their way through qualifiers, participants were given the chance to insert their custom-made Gunpla into the world of "Bonds of the Battlefield." They then piloted their Gunpla in a battle tournament. Aozora Sorano was the runner-up in the one-on-one battle course.

Yes. I think it was around three to four months after I began building my own Gunpla. I saw a poster recruiting entrants to participate in the tournament at a video arcade.
You can imagine my surprise, right?
I mean, it was a chance to pilot the Gundam I customized in "Bonds of the Battlefield"! The moment I saw it, I immediately began working on the Gunpla I would submit.

-And that’s how you created the character "The Prince of the Candy Country☆Beargguy III."-
(When she made it through the qualifiers and knew she could participate in the tournament) I thought to myself, "It’s happening!" (Laughs)
There’s a character named "Kirara" in "Gundam Build Fighters" series. At that time, I was really attracted to the idea of a "Gunpla Idol," and I wanted to be one myself!
However, I was used to playing team battles in "Bonds of the Battlefield" and the tournament rules called for one-on-one battles. I had no experience, so I was convinced I wouldn’t be good enough and practiced a lot before the day of the tournament.

-On the day of the tournament, how did it feel to pilot your own custom-made Gunpla?-
That was an experience all my own… Even looking back on it now, I feel proud.
When you’re piloting, you can see the hands of your mobile suit, and they really looked like those of the Beargguy I built. I was amazed at the detail.
I was pretty creative about the armaments I wanted the machine to have, but even those were recreated in exact detail. Since Beargguy is "the prince of the candy country," he shoots cotton candy from his mouth as a weapon. The determined facial expressions they gave him in those moments were really cute, so I have the CG team to thank for that.

-It sounds like a great experience. It’s no exaggeration to say that you experienced the dream of modelers all over the world.-
I’m very grateful.
-Well, I think Gundam fans recognized your actions and passion for the work came from love. I’ve heard that you’re particularly fond of "GUNDAM UC." This interview will be released on December 20th, and on that same day, all episodes of "MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM UC Re:0096" will be given a free limited release on GUNDAM.INFO. Could you tell us what you like about that series?-
I saw it by chance around the time I was watching "War in the Pocket" and other series related to the One Year War.
"MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM UC Re:0096" had a different style than the other Universal Century anime I had watched, but there were a lot of keywords that I had heard before, as well as mobile suits whose lineage can be traced back to the earlier Universal Century series. As a fan of the Universal Century, I knew it was something I would get hooked on, and I was also attracted to the MS designs, so I was determined to watch more.
That was right before Episode 7 of the OVA was released, so I caught up on episodes 1 through 6, and then, for the first time, I was able to watch the release in real time at a movie theater. It felt like destiny that I encountered the series. Since then, I often recommend "GUNDAM UC" to Gundam beginners. Each episode has a sweeping storyline, and it leaves you no room to get bored. The love stories and historical episodes stand on their own too, so even as unfamiliar as I was then, I was able to get sucked into the setting right away.
This is more of a personal thing, but at that time, I was really worried about the future of my career as an idol. I had just retired from the group that I had been a member of. I was losing faith in my ability to make it on my own and developing trust issues.
Watching "GUNDAM UC" at that time, there are several scenes where Banagher and the other characters show how ties with others and people’s feelings can change the course of war or the world itself. It helped me realize that there were still so many people I wanted to interact with in the world.
Had I not watched "GUNDAM UC," I might have remained distrustful of other people.

-Thank you for such a passionate recommendation. Are there any characters that you particularly like?-
In "GUNDAM UC," I’m a big fan of Marida Cruz.
She starts out as someone who says things like, "When you enter a battlefield, you become a battle unit called a pilot," but as she interacts with Banagher, you start to see her humanity too. I really liked watching that process unfold. It wasn’t just her. The relationships between all sorts of different characters in "GUNDAM UC" are portrayed with a lot of detail. As a viewer, that warmth was a big comfort for me too.

-The way you can see, through battle, that each character has their own feelings and motivations is one of Gundam’s biggest charms, isn’t it?-
"Gundam" stories are always really complex, and I imagine that all of the characters are correct in their own way.
The Federation and Zeon are on opposing sides, and there were a lot of instances where I could put myself in the shoes of the different characters. If I were in their position, I’m sure I would have acted the same way.
Marida’s strength and unwavering determination amid those circumstances is something I really respect.
She has scars from her upbringing that can’t be healed, and I sympathize with that too, but she never becomes corrupt and keeps on fighting for her convictions "no matter what."
That’s what made her such a memorable character to me.
It’s because she met Banagher that she’s truly able to say, "no matter what," and it made me realize that building connections with different people will help me to grow constantly.
I too want to become a person like Marida.

-Are there any particular scenes that you’d like to recommend to readers of GUNDAM.INFO? -
I think the Gundam series has a lot of eating scenes that seem to carry hidden meanings.
For example, I like the scene in "Gundam SEED" where the divisions between the two opposing forces are emphasized by a casual conversation about what sauce to put on a kebab…
In "GUNDAM UC," there’s a scene I really like where Audrey eats a hot dog.
In that scene, you can tell from her expression that her heart has softened, little by little, since meeting Banagher. When Mineva first appeared, she was a young girl who’d been thrust into a high position, so it was surprising to see her make expressions like that… the gap between the opposing aspects of her personality was charming.

Oh, and I also like the scene where Mineva says, "Catch me, Banagher!"
I’d never really been interested in the romance aspects of past Gundam series, but those two impressed me because it felt like they had overcome the obstacle of being Newtypes and made a real heart-to-heart connection.
I think Mineva had to live with a strong will because of her class. But in that scene, she entrusts her life to someone she believes in. I could really feel the trust she felt for Banagher and it touched the young girl inside me.

I also love the scene where Zinnerman tells Marida to follow her heart.
In the context of the story, Zinnerman associates Marida with his daughter who died, but Marida thinks of him as a master whose orders she must follow. However, Marida too gradually changes and in the end, she changes the way she addresses him. Just thinking about it makes me tear up…

-If you were to summarize what you love about "GUNDAM UC," how would you do it? -
Fans of Gundam will be pleased to see MS they are familiar with and the more you know about the older series, the deeper the understanding you’ll have, which makes certain elements even more interesting.
And to have real drama unfold on top of all that is its greatest charm.
I think people want to believe in themselves, but in the course of daily life, it’s a really hard thing to do.
Even so, the series teaches you the importance of having the will to say "no matter what," as well as the power of your own potential, that of your friends, and connections with others.
I hope people take something from "GUNDAM UC" that will help them in their daily lives.

-Thank you very much. For the final question, what has "Gundam" meant to your life? -
For me, I’d say "Gundam" has been a guiding light.
I’ve been an idol now for 11 years and there are many times when I’ve been influenced by "Gundam" to say, "This is what I want to do."
The characters inspire me and give me examples of the kind of person I can be or how I can be stronger.
Without "Gundam," I wouldn’t be the person I am today. That’s how much it has guided me.
It’s an anime series I can recommend to everyone from the bottom of my heart.

-That concludes our "Gundam Experts" interview.
