AX Gundam VIP Event Summer 2022 Event Report – The Director of the Live Action Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Also Attended the Event!
GUNPLA, games, and anime talk panels!
Anime Expo 2022 (AX2022), North America’s largest manga and anime fair, was held in Los Angeles (USA)’s Convention Center over four days from Friday, July 1st, to Monday, July 4th.
Anime Expo is a yearly event focusing on Japanese pop culture, spearheaded by anime and manga. It was back to being held as an offline event for the first time since 2019, so a crowd of anime fans made their way to the lively, packed venue.
The fanmeeting event AX Gundam VIP Event Summer 2022 was held on Sunday, July 3rd. It hosted talk panels about the Gundam anime, GUNPLA, and games and had a rich display of GUNPLA, figures, and video games.

The fanmeeting event took place in a special venue within Lounge 21 inside the Los Angeles Convention Center. Four statues set up at the entrance welcomed the invitees.
A large number of items, in particular GUNPLA and figures, were on display in the venue. There also were the newest playable demo for SD Gundam Battle Alliance and a corner where guests could play a retro videogame to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Gundam games. The guests took their time and enjoyed the displays.
There were also talk panels about three topics: GUNPLA, games, and anime.
The GUNPLA panel opened the event. The guest was the GUNPLA builder and cosplayer Mecha Maiden. The hosts introduced the newest GUNPLA, including the Mobile Suits that appear in Mobile Suit Gundam THE WITCH FROM MERCURY and the MGEX Strike Freedom Gundam, and she took them in her hands and reviewed them.

Next came a demonstration of a GUNPLA scan from the ROAD TO GUNPLA BATTLE Project, in which you can scan your GUNPLA and take part in virtual battles. The host used an ENTRY GRADE 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam and showed how to play the game from scan to battle. After scanning, one participant chosen from the audience played the game, utilizing the data collected from the scan. The guests in the venue were impressed at this performance that showed GUNPLA’s future possibilities.
The next panel delivered the newest information about Gundam games. It introduced GUNDAM EVOLUTION and SD Gundam Battle Alliance and announced the latest news about the games currently being developed.
The GUNDAM EVOLUTION development team got on stage and talked about the basics of the game and their enthusiasm for it. They talked about how carefully the game was designed; for example, a former professional gamer specialized in FPS titles and other top players were involved in the development.
In the SD Gundam Battle Alliance part, the speakers started by explaining the basics of SD Gundam and went on to introduce the peculiarities of Battle Alliance. There was also a quiz where guests had to guess a Mobile Suit from its silhouette. A GUNPLA was awarded to the participant who correctly guessed the Gundam Astray Red Frame Kai, an MS newly added to the game.
They also announced the latest info about other titles, such as GUNDAM BREAKER MOBILE, SD Gundam G Generation Eternal, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2. The game panel ended amidst great excitement

They introduced the latest TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam THE WITCH FROM MERCURY, which also graced the outside walls of the Anime Expo 2022 venue, as well as the shows that are in the works now. The audience roared with joy at the announcement that the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island, currently a hit in Japan, will be shown in USA theaters this fall.
They introduced the latest TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam THE WITCH FROM MERCURY, which also graced the outside walls of the Anime Expo 2022 venue, as well as the shows that are in the works now. The audience roared with joy at the announcement that the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island, currently a hit in Japan, will be shown in USA theaters this fall.
At the end of the event, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who will direct the live-action Mobile Suit Gundam movie, also showed up and talked about his enthusiasm for Gundam. The fanmeeting ended in great success.
