Gundam Cross War, the physical and digital CCG, will crown regional champions for its new United Front booster set!
From September 3rd through the 22nd at 8 loccations across Japan, players will duel for a spot at the inaugural Japan championship on October 23rd.
On September 4th, Kanto followed Osaka and Nagoya in determining its champion, with matches played at Hobby Station in Ikebukuro.
Clashing there for the laurels were be the two survivors of Swiss-system preliminaries followed by a knockout round: Aya, who makes short work of her opponents with a signature blue-green deck pairing the Full Armor Gundam (Io use) and Psyco Zaku (Daryl use), and Tallgeesky, whose event-focused deck includes 18 in the MS deck and 10 in the sideboard. Here’s our play-by-play!
Tallgeesky played first in Match 1.
However, Aya made the first decisive move, deploying a BT03-005 Ball Type K on turn 4.
She strengthened her control of the battlefield with BT03-034 Zaku Cannon + BT01-052 Kamille Bidan and ST01-002 Guncannon + BT01-159 Mikazuki Augus between turns 8 and 10.
However, Tallgeesky was able to deploy BT03-065 Gundam Nadleeh, which damages all enemy suits when deployed, using its Armed Intervention: 2 effect, and then follow up with the event BT03-099 Operation Daybreak. A second Nadleeh played, and Aya’s side of the battlefield was wiped clean.
▲ Armed Intervention and area damage make it a mainstay in yellow-black decks for its field-clearing ability.
Suddenly, the tables had turned. While Aya played SP-02-003 Guncannon + Mikazuki Augus on the subsequent turn, backed up with BT01-070 Say it Ain't So, Bernie!, Tallgeesky immediately replied with the SP02-043 Force Impulse Gundam which automatically destroys any unit it attacks which has a lower ATK.
▲ Between its on-cast effect and ability to destroy lower-ATK enemy units, it can carve through enemy defenses.
Say It Ain’t So, Bernie! Is a powerful counter card that destroys any unit which receives damage from the unit it’s applied to, but with Force Impulse Gundam’s effect triggering before damage is resolved, it has no chance to take effect. Whether this was misfortune or a miscalculation, the results were painful for Aya.
As her ship continues to take damage, she destroys the Force Impulse Gundam with Psyco Zaku (Daryl use) + Kamille Bidan. With a counter equipped, this could be her chance for a comeback.
Then, Tallgeesky’s turn on turn 13. While he attacks the Psyco Zaku (Daryl use) with his Gundam Nadleeh, BT01-068 It doesn’t matter how powerful you are if you can’t hit me! blocks all damage.
This was just a feint, however, as once its effect is triggered he deploys BT03-095 Tallgeese + BT01-154 Paptimus Scirocco. With BT01-103 Wings of Light, which allows one unit to be returned to “awaiting orders” status, he attacks the Psyco Zaku (Daryl use). Tallgeese + Paptimus Scirocco combine for only 5 ATK, while the Psyco Zaku (Daryl use) has 7 DEF, but by using its Operation effect he can play Wings of Light and attack a second time.
▲ A must-have in control decks! Wings of Light and Ghost of Star make for a fearsome combination!
Reactivating Operation, he once again plays Wings of Light and attacks, this time targeting Aya’s ship.
A third Operation plays BT03-128 Ghost of Char, which deploys three red 2/2 Large Funnel Bit tokens. Using Paptimus Scirocco’s dispatch effect to activate a crew card, he deploys another Funnel token. And then, with SP02-057 Picture your target! Active and granting +2 to all units and tokens, he makes an enhanced final assault for victory. Tallgeesky’s flashy plays carry the first match.
In the second match, Aya moves first.
Just like in the first match, she leads off with the Ball Type K; subsequently she strengthens her defenses with the Guncannon + SP01-067 Io Fleming.
However, Tallgeesky is again able to deploy Gundam Nadleeh at cost 2 thanks to its Armed Intervention effect. The Ball Type K is destroid.
Aya is able to keep the Zaku Cannon alive with counters, but only until turn 10, where Tallgeesky manages to deploy two Gundam Nadleehs. As well as destroying the Zaku Cannon, the Paptimus Scirocco piloting Nadleeh reactivates a crew card and allows him to deploy Black Unit, returning Aya’s Guncannon (or any blue or yellow opposing unit) to her hand. With Aya’s units removed from play, her ship is open to damage.
While Aya struggles to present a defense, repeated uses of Black Unit allow Tallgeesky to whittle down her ship’s health.
▲ An event that forms a solid counter to blue or yellow decks! Ruin your opponent’s tempo!
Tallgeesky’s exceptionally event-heavy deck, at nearly half its cards, can be feast-or-famine, but this time it leads him to a clean 2-0 victory.
