■ What’s “Gundam VR Raids Daiba!”? Get all the details!
Gundam VR Raids Daiba uses VR technology and a special simulator to create an entirely new experience. Unlike previous Gundam games, you can experience clashes between the life-sized Gundam and enemy mobile suits with your own senses. See gigantic mobile suits fight it our before your very eyes for the first time ever!
■ A thrilling experience!手に汗握る体験! Play Report
Here’s where you find out just what it’s like!
First, the player gets a short briefing from staff, and straps into a special harness/ Since the game can track the player’s position as they walk, this is a necessary safety measure for the new VR experience.
Next, a head-mounted display and headphones are put on. The player opens their eyes to a view of the life-sized Gundam in Diver City Plaza. Even the smallest details of the surrounding area are modeled—it’s as if you just walked out the door. As you look up at the Gundam, enemies suddenly raid, with mobile suits opening up machine gun fire. As shattered glass falls in the plaza, Amuro reaches out the Gundam’s manipulator, letting you climb in for safety. Lifted up, you ride along at approximately the Gundam’s waist height. Just when you think you’re safe, however, an enemy closes for a melee attack... ... And to find out the rest, come try it yourself! It’s sure to astound whether it’s your first VR experience or you’re already an enthusiast.
▲ See a 360-degree view of the area around the life-sized Gundam. Suddenly, a mobile suit raid breaks the peace!
▲ See, hear, and feel the action! You’ll never forget the Gundam’s manipulator reaching out to protect you!
■ We interview the development manager!
▲ Development manager Tamiya (left), team chief Imoto (right)
We had the chance to speak with development manager and chief director Tamiya, as well as team chief Kazufumi Imoto.
For the development of Gundam VR, while they knew existing VR techniques using sight and sound would produce a quality result, they made the decision to add free walking and a custom mechanical simulator and further heighten the experience. Of course, to further add realism, binaural recording (a more realistic recordning technique) was employed to capture the actual sounds around the Gundam.
A key focus in development was to express both the impact and sense of danger one first feels when seeing the life-sized Gundam.
Tamiya suggests that players, upon arrival in Odaiba, first take in the Gundam’s vast scale before then trying the VR experience and finally revisiting reality. How will VR change the wat you see the world?
