Megumi Han, the Voice Actress of Sayla from Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN, Visited GUNDAM Café TOKYO! A Report of the Special Talk Program Held on November 8th
A fortuneLatte drink celebrating her visit will be available until November 14th!
A special talk program was held on Sunday, November 8th, at the experience-based entertainment restaurant GUNDAM Café TOKYO BRAND CORE (GUNDAM Café TOKYO).
The special program was split into two parts.
Part 1 showcased the full version of the G DIMENSIONS EX DINNER SHOW- ZEON Rally Gathering Presented by Garma & Char including actor staff members.
For Part 2, Megumi Han, the voice of Sayla Mass from Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN appeared as a special guest and MC Hyori Takahashi held a special talk show covering topics on THE ORIGIN series.
Here are the details of the talk show featuring Megumi Han in Part 2:
It was Megumi Han’s first visit to GUNDAM Café TOKYO, and while its firm concept took her by surprise, she took a photo next to “him” (the unique man in the white suit) within ZEON’S DINER TOKYO, claiming she felt a little shy. She then made her way to the GOODS SHOP to purchase the Super Spicy Mince and Miso- Sayla Ver. to later use as topping for her rice meals.
The Teacup & Saucer set was then introduced, which only the participants of the G DIMENSIONS EX DINNER SHOW- ZEON Rally Gathering Presented by Garma & Char can purchase. This item is a replica of the teacup and saucer Garma uses during the show, but Megumi Han told us: “In this scene, Garma doesn’t eat any cake at all, but director Mr. Yasuhiko wanted the audience to see his cake crumble every time he was angered”.
Megumi Han also mentioned that Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN is also in a way a successor to Mobile Suit Gundam that came to be thanks to the love of its fans.
Her first encounter with Mobile Suit Gundam was when she was 3 years old. After playing an unmarked VHS that contained a recording of a certain episode, it showed the scene of Lalah and Amuro meeting each other by the lakeshore. Hearing Lalah’s voice, Megumi exclaimed, “It’s Mom!” (Megumi Han’s mother is Keiko Han, the voice actor of Lalah).
When she was younger, she met You Inoue, Sayla’s voice actor in Mobile Suit Gundam by pure coincidence in the toy section of the department store. Megumi’s impression of You Inoue was that she was “the real Sayla”, and mentioned she feels the weight of this event as she performs as Sayla in THE ORIGIN.
Megumi Han also told the audience that she had met Shuichi Ikeda, the voice actor of Char Aznable, before she became a voice actor herself. When they worked together on her debut title, she received a handwritten letter with the words “I await your growth”. The two actors reunited as siblings in THE ORIGIN, to which Megumi Han says she spent a very long time writing a reply.
Next, Megumi Han went into analyzing 5 hand-picked scenes from THE ORIGIN and stated: “Sayla hasn’t witnessed the deaths of those important to her”. For this reason, she decides to become a doctor so she can save lives but soon comes to realize that some lives have to be sacrificed in order to protect those she loved. Megumi Han believes that this necessity for change is what has shaped Mobile Suit Gundam’s Sayla Mass.
During the Q&A section, Megumi Han receives an interesting question: “If you were to cook something for Casval, what would you make?”. To this, she answers that she’d want to make “handmade riceballs with pickles and tea”, a soul food she’s grown up eating but something he’s never tried making before. Megumi Han also mentions that by using the Super Spicy Mince and Miso as the filling for the riceballs, “Casval might turn 3 times redder than usual (from the spiciness)”, getting laughs from the audience.
Lastly, Megumi Han said she was thankful for the Gundam franchise giving her the chance to meet her fans after a long while. The special talk program continued for longer than expected due to the excitement and with that, the event came to a close.
